Artist and teacher Alison Bowmer (pictured left) thought that a great way to give back to the community would be to use her creativity and artistic skills to fundraise for a good cause – Glaucoma Australia.
From the 3-5 November, Alison hosted her ‘Spice of Life’ Art Exhibition to share her wonderful work, and at the same time, spread the word on how important it was for all Australians to get their eyes tested.
“My mother-in law and her two brothers have been impacted by glaucoma so I know first-hand how challenging life can be once you are diagnosed” Alison says “because glaucoma can be hereditary, I remind my husband and boys to get regular eye checks”.
Alison sold 10 paintings and several Christmas cards at her exhibition, donating 10% of proceeds to Glaucoma Australia’s SiGHTWiSE Patient Support program. She says “if we support patients and families with glaucoma, then you just never know, someone we support may go on to study and make a breakthrough in the treatment of this debilitating disease".
Alison was thrilled to have fundraised $320 knowing that she would be helping others in the community doing something that she loves. She plans on holding another fundraiser next year and will continue to donate 10% of ongoing sales of her cards to Glaucoma Australia on an ongoing basis.
