Glaucoma Australia
July 2023

I was diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma in 1993, when I began to see auras around streetlamps.

A row of street lamps with a halo of light around the nearest lamp.

I had read that this is a symptom, so I was soon tested by an ophthalmologist.

My awareness of glaucoma dated back before 1993 to my mother’s diagnosis earlier. She was not surprised at my diagnosis. She also helped me adjust to having to use drops for the rest of my life.

If only I had been tested before, I may have prevented damage to my optic nerves.

Nowadays, I am monitored by both an optometrist and an ophthalmologist, for glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. I have a brother who is very myopic but he is glaucoma free, luckily.

I find that Glaucoma Australia’s expert advice is especially helpful whenever I need answers to glaucoma questions.
