Early detection and strict adherence to treatment are so important to glaucoma.
A cousin had warned me that she had developed glaucoma so I had yearly eye checks which included OCT once it became available. With the aid of that technology, I was diagnosed with normal tension glaucoma in my right eye 10 years ago and in my left eye 2 years later.
I have been using Xalatan eye drops since diagnosis and don’t think I’ve forgotten my drops more than a few times in 10 years.
The result is that after 10 years of glaucoma, field tests show there is virtually no loss of sight in either eye. I’m so thankful for that and feel very grateful towards my cousin for alerting me to the family history of glaucoma.
A second of my cousins now also has glaucoma and another is “at risk”.
If you know of any family member who has had a diagnosis of glaucoma, please ensure that you have your eyes checked regularly. I did, and I’m so glad I did.
