I had re-entered the work force a few years before I was diagnosed. I had stopped having regular check-ups for several years as my glasses seemed perfect for my needs and I saw no reason to change them.
I left my glasses on the train on the way to work and couldn't find them at the lost property office so was forced to go to the optician. She told me I had some bleeding behind my eye and a pressure of 21.
Needless to say the ophthalmologist diagnosed me with Glaucoma and I was given two different eye drops. I felt lost, anxious and sorry for myself. My ophthalmologist and Glaucoma News gave me a rational view. I knew I had a lifetime of treatment and medication but I realised my attitude would make a difference and I was fortunate enough to afford my treatment.
Medication and treatment is expensive and more government assistance would be great. Also I think Glaucoma should be treated like breast cancer and prostate cancer and have regular eye check-ups that are free for everyone and helping people focus on this condition should be the norm.
When it is endangered it makes you realise how wonderful sight is and everything that can be done to safeguard it should be done. No matter whether you are rich or poor treatment should be available to you.
