James’ Story: Living With Glaucoma at a Young Age

At first, the diagnosis came as a shock.

“It felt scary at first, but over time I adapted, stayed consistent with treatment, and became more mindful of my eye health.” 

Like many people newly diagnosed with glaucoma, the early period was the most difficult; “The hardest part was understanding the condition and what it meant long term,” James explains.

“I felt a bit overwhelmed at first, but gradually got clearer information and better support from my doctor.”

Over time, learning more about the condition helped him feel more in control. James began managing his glaucoma through regular treatment and consistent follow-up care.

“Regular eye drops, consistent check-ups, and learning about glaucoma have helped most.”

He also found that speaking with a health professional provided reassurance and clarity.

“Speaking with an educator gave me clarity and reassurance. Clear advice and ongoing support made managing the condition feel more manageable.”

While James continues to manage his condition well, he has noticed subtle changes in daily life.

“Glaucoma has made me more cautious in daily life,” he says. “I manage work and routines well, but driving at night feels harder. It’s affected my confidence at times, though I stay independent and active.”

Despite these challenges, James remains focused on maintaining his independence and protecting his vision. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasises the importance of taking glaucoma seriously from the beginning.

“Take it seriously, follow treatment, attend checkups, protect your vision, and remember many people manage glaucoma well with early care.”

James’s story is a reminder that glaucoma can affect people at any age - and that early diagnosis, education and consistent care can make a meaningful difference in long-term outcomes.
