How can glaucoma impact my driving?

At our Live Q&A event next week, you’ll hear from ophthalmologists Dr Wechsler and Dr Sharma about the potential challenges people with glaucoma face when it comes to driving, and how vision changes can impact safety and licensing.

  • The importance of visual field testing in assessing a person’s fitness to drive, with a particular focus on how results relate to the national driving standards.
  • The key differences between visual acuity and visual field requirements, explaining how each is assessed and applied within current driving regulations.
     

✨ About the speaker ✨ 

Dr David Wechsler (MB,BS FRANZCO) trained at Sydney Eye Hospital, and then underwent further training specifically in Glaucoma at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the UK. He has been working in both public and private practice since 2007, and is the Director of Burwood Eye Clinic in Sydney. He is involved in registrar teaching and training, and is an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He has experience in managing patients from early stages right up to advanced glaucoma, and has been working with Glaucoma Australia in providing educational activities since 2009. He recently joined the board as a non-executive director. Since 2014 he has also been a visiting specialist to the Royal Darwin Hospital. He has contributed to the scientific literature, specifically in the field of Glaucoma Surgery, and reviews articles for international journals.

Dr Neil Sharma (MBBS MMed FRANZCO) trained at Sydney Eye Hospital and underwent subspeciality training in medical retinal diseases at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK. He commenced as a Staff-Specialist ophthalmologist at Westmead Hospital in 2013. Privately he works at Eye and Retina Specialists in Zetland. He has been involved in registrar teaching, and is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and the University of Wollongong. He is interested in raising public awareness of eye diseases and eye health, and is a regular invited guest on 2GB Radio in Sydney and 4BC Radio in Brisbane. He was awarded the 2020 Safework NSW Award for work, health and safety response to COVID-19, and was the 2021 Regional Winner (City of Sydney) for Innovation in the NSW Business Awards. He has a particular interest in vision disorders and driving.
