Sydney, Australia – Applications for the annual Glaucoma Australia ‘Quinlivan’ Research Grants are now open until 5pm (AEST) 1 July 2021, with the successful recipients being announced on World Sight Day (14 October 2021).
The William A Quinlivan Research Fund was established in 2006 by the late Mr Marcus Quinlivan in honour of his father. Since the funds inception, Glaucoma Australia has committed over $1 million to support high quality glaucoma research in Australia aimed at improving the lives of people with glaucoma through better detection and treatment.
“We are very proud to announce applications are now open for the 2021 round of our ‘Quinlivan’ Research Grants which will continue to fund research that supports our mission to prevent sight loss by increasing early detection and improving treatment adherence.” said Glaucoma Australia CEO Annie Gibbins.
In this next round Glaucoma Australia will invest up to $200,000 and anticipate between 1 and 4 grants will be awarded. All projects will be completed within 3 years of grant allocation and seed fund grants could be used to apply for further funding with NHMRC or other agencies.
Glaucoma Australia is committed to supporting research which focuses on the following four domains:
- Increasing the rate and reliability of early detection of glaucoma
- Improving the treatment and care experience
- Improving the quality and experience of monitoring glaucoma progression
- Providing management tools to improve the quality of life for people with glaucoma
The Glaucoma Australia ‘Quinlivan’ Research Grants are awarded following rigorous evaluation, based largely on the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) process, along with peer review, to ensure that the successful applicants meet the highest standards. Submissions are reviewed by the Glaucoma Australia Independent Research Panel consisting of internationally recognised experts in glaucoma research including the fields of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Pharmacy.

Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine hope to develop new glaucoma therapies by testing human neurons and a regenerative therapy to rescue dying visual neurons. They’ve received a new five year, US$2 million grant from the National Eye Institute for the project.
People of African ancestry are five times as likely as others to develop glaucoma and up to 15 times as likely to be blinded by the condition, but most research has used data from people of European ancestry.
We are inviting individuals who have accessed eyecare services previously to participate in a focus group discussion so that we can better understand what good eye care means to the patient.
